Monday Shoot

Monday being Martin Luther King and General Lee Day, I figured it was a good idea to shoot some guns. So I went to the range with GWB, who wanted to practice with his new Sig and check out a Christmas gift of a spotting scope.

So we blasted away, which was a lot of fun, then went for an armed excursion in some nearby woods. That was good too, although hoped for squirrels didn't materialize, despite the great stealth and calling expertise of the hunters.

Then, right at dusk, the air was filled with wild howling. It was an eerie, untamed sound and it taught me something, Viz. If you want to call coyotes, set up near the woods by the range.

Shoot straight,

Or if you want to cheat, shoot a feral hog and then wait for the coyotes to show up...

Looks like a good time was had. Any day afield is a good day!
Wonder where the term "shoot straight" came from...

I have wondered about the cheating option, LL...

Not sure where that phrase comes from, Brighid. It's a good one, though.

There are lots of ways to cheat. A varmint call (dead rabbit wail) is very effective if you know how to do it. If they're out there, they'll come in on the call. They will smell human, but so many varmint style predators (bobcats and coyotes) live in close proximity to humans these days that they're not spooked by it.

I've been using rabbit distress... but haven't been in the right place or very persistent.

I'll try these woods and see how it goes.

Anymore you'll be lucky if a dead animal wail only attracts coyotes and bobcats. Better watch out for the hedgewitches and other opportunistic occult ravers...

Say, for example, that I started calling around midnight in Austin. Who knows what'd turn up?

Or, for example, in HPV.

No shortage of urban predators...

Please -- TAKE CAUTION.

(And in general, just do not go to highland park village-- just don't do that, ever-- predators will eat you alive without any instigating on your part at all.) Don't say I didn't warn you...
